The fall of an accidental manager - By Naomi Kershaw

An issue we continue to see within organisations is the fall of the accidental manager, and by that, I mean a star employee who has rightfully been rewarded with a leadership role, or as a result of organisational change has fallen into that role, and suddenly, they are failing to meet expectations. Now of course, this is stressful for the manager themselves, no body -wants- to underperform, but the impact of poor management on organisational productivity and performance is staggering.

It's easy to take on the position that said manager was unable to perform at leadership level, that they weren’t ready to progress, or that the additional responsibilities were outside their capability… but instead, what we should question is how that Manager was prepared for a leadership role? How were their skills developed to meet those required of a manager? How were they supported throughout the transition?

When it comes down to it, Management is a skill. One that requires honing and maturing, it is made up of traits, such as; decision making, analytical and objective thinking, interpersonal communication and coordination, organisation, emotional intelligence etc. Whilst for some lucky few, these qualities are innate, for the majority of us they need to be nurtured, developed and practiced, before they become instinctual.

Quest’s ‘Introduction to Management’ course on the 29th of February, 9am - 1pm has been designed with this in mind.

  • It considers the qualities of a ‘good manager’, what this looks like in practice and how it can be adapted and utilised within the workplace, before challenging concepts of managers vs leaders and their impact and function within organisations.
  • It provides an overview of key legislation, often overlooked, but critical for any manager with people responsibilities to be aware of.
  • It explores the Employee Journey, from the point of attraction to the business, through to departure and looks at the impact a manager’s involvement and actions can have on the employee’s experience at each stage.
  • The course highlight’s key issues noted within people management, focusing on Absence and Grievance management. How they should be handled and the role of the manager in the facilitation of these practices.
  • Finally, it invites participants to develop the soft skills, specifically communication – how to set expectations, how to give feedback and undertake difficult discussions.

When it comes to Management training, it isn’t a matter of training people ‘how’ to manage, but rather to provide them with the tools they need to figure out how -they- manage and what kind of manager they want to be moving forward.
