As Olympic fever gripped the Nation, the finely honed athletes of the GM Chamber Golf Society descended on wonderful Wallasey Golf Club for their August meeting. The Captain was absent - rumours abounded that he had set off to London in search of Olympic glory in the ‘Going Downhill Fast' competition - leaving a field of over 40 golfers to go for Gold at the historic links course. Vice-Captain Tim Roberts (I-COM) proved a more than capable deputy on the day. He took charge of proceedings aided by daughter Sophie, who acted as his personal assistant, caddy and ball spotter. The Vice-Captain has cleverly mastered the art of delegation, though after this golfing performance he may well be looking to delegate parts of his game too. Indeed, many of the field found scoring difficult on this dry fast links with its tough, unforgiving rough. Release Money Group are excellent supporters of the Society. Led by charismatic Chairman Darren Varden, the company recently introduced Dan Walker as a new full member. And on this occasion, Release Money Group's guest Mark Wilding was best visitor with 35 points. CEO Steve Slater also got a two on the 5th. Well done chaps. Society President and burgeoning television personality Franklin Sinclair scored well once again. There is a fine line between genius and insanity which our President often appears to erase. However, his claim to the Bronze medal was more Insane than Usain Bolt, as both he and Matt Watts (Lowri Beck) lost out to Robert Elliott (Care Asset Management) for third on a card play-off after they all accumulated 34 points. 7 handicapper Mike Wood (Rupert Wood & Son) took Silver with an excellent 36 points total which included two two’s (on the 9th and 12th) holes. This was yet another fine performance from the Ashton-Under-Lyne based golfer. Of course, much has been made of the success of Yorkshire athletes at the 2012 Olympics. So it was only fitting that Brian Eyre (PSL Print Management) displayed characteristic Yorkshire grit by following on from fellow Sheffielder Jessica Ennis in taking the Society’s Gold Medal with a superb 39 points (off a handicap of 13). The last time we looked, Brian’s abs were not quite in Jessica’s league, but he plays consistently well at Society gatherings and is always one to watch once his name appears on the team sheet. Warm congratulations are due to Brian in winning a Stableford competition at the home club of Dr Frank Stableford, founder of the popular scoring format. Lancastrian members of the Society now wait to see if Yorkshire can build on its Olympic triumphs by managing to get a football team into the Premier League. Luke Hankins of BPM Group was our generous sponsor on the day, providing branded golf goodies for members and delivering an enlightening introduction to his building project management business (as well as demonstrating an unusual taste in footwear). We return to Manchester in September for our fixture at the Marriott Worsley Park. Alvaro Quiros, Andres Romero and Ross McGowan all climbed the European rankings by winning Challenge Tour events at this Championship course in recent years. You can follow in their footsteps by joining us on September 13th. Playing this great game is a wonderful way to get to know people, and at the Golf Society our aim is that you can network with a group that you can grow to know, like and trust. We hope to see our members and their guests again soon, hopefully at Worsley Park in September.
