You may not understand why your ex-partner has invited you to mediation.
You may be surprised to learn that your former partner is of the view that there are problems existing between you. You could be unaware of what the issues are.
The fact that our mediation service has been contacted, is an indication that your ex-partner has issues they believe need to be resolved.
It may be that one or both of you have been referred to mediation by a Solicitor or other professional. A family member or friend may have suggested mediation. One of you may have contacted us directly.
You may feel there are no problems existing between you. You may not feel you need to attend. We would still urge you to attend. Once a problem has been aired, it is then easier to look for solutions.
It may be that your ex-partner feels unable to discuss their issues directly with you. They may wish a Mediator to help them broach these issues and explore options in a safe and confidential environment. A Mediator is an independent facilitator. They can help both of you reach a fair agreement, rather than proceeding via a legal fight. The Mediator does not take sides.
Mediation gives both of you the opportunity to resolve the issues between you.
It may be that mediation is being suggested rather than the matter proceeding down the traditional legal route. If legal proceedings were to be issued against you, this would no doubt immediately put you on the defensive, and the process is very adversarial by its very nature.
You may seek legal advice at any time even if you choose to attend mediation. Our Mediators are Lawyer Mediators. They will give you legal facts during mediation. They will also suggest you seek independent legal advice as and when needed during mediation. You are also free to take your own legal advice at any time during mediation.
